HOW AUCKLAND FARES
BIG MAIZE SHIPMENT ARRIVES Auckland is well supplied with all classes of root products. Onions remain a glut on the market, with inferior quality parcels hard to quit, while good firm samples are quoted ex store from £ 6 to £ G 10s a ton. The local potato crop is practically exhausted, and merchants are drawing •on the South for future requirements. Consignments have eased during the past week or so, and though merchants’ ex store quotations have remained at from £6 IDs to £7, it is expected that local values will harden in the near future to correspond with the firmer tone in the South. During the week 7,000 sacks of Java maize was landed ex the Sussex. The tact that a considerable portion of the consignment was affected by weevil, however, necessitating fumigating, has caused quotations to harden in accord, and the market remains at late rates. Further parcels of the Java cereal are .expected in the near future ex Sydney, but, as prices have advanced there, it is not expected that any fresh contracts will be entered into. Quotations from South Africa this week give little prospect of business ironi ihat quarter unless values fall considerably, as it would be landed in New Zealand on top of the new season’s crop. With the price in the vicinity of Gs in Australia, business there is also out of the question. Merchants anticipate a short market locally until the Coast crop is fit for shelling in July. Even at 8s Gd a bushel retail, however, there is a steady local demand for maize. Sales to United Kingdom and Australia of peas, oats and barley have had the effect of hardening the market for these cereals, though, as yet, tlier# has been little change locally. Quotations for Partridge peas have advanced 3s in the South during the week. Gartons are quoted through store at 4s 3d for A’s, and 4s for B’s; fowl wheat, 7s Gd; Blenheim chaff, £9 10s Canterbury chaff, £9; feed barley, 5s 6d.
