STANDARDISED LIMBS DO NOT SUIT SOLDIERS
WOODEN LEGS POPULAR DEPUTATION TO MR. COATES F OUR crippled returned soldiers limped up the hill to the Grand Hotel this morning to protest to the Prime Minister, the Hon. J. G. Coates, against the standard isat ion of the artificial limbs supplied to limbless soldiers. The members of the deputation were Messrs. T. S. Miller, A C Nugent, V. T. Dibble, and H. M. White. Mr. Miller said that standardised limbs did not conform to indi'vidual requirements. Mr. Dibble: The trouble is that the Government is endeavouring to standardise parts that should not be standardised. The Prime Minister: That may be so. Mr. Miller said there were dozens of cases where a standard limb could not be fitted. They asked that limbless men be granted the option of having metal or wood, as they desired. He pointed out that the Australian Government had done' away with metal limbs. Mr. Nugent hoped New Zealand would not repeat the error made by the British Government, which had failed in an effort to standardise artificial limbs. “All I can tell you,” said the Prime Minister, “is that I shall get in touch with the Minister of Defence, and consult with him before any. contract is let.”
Mr. Coates promised to inspect the artificial limb factory next time he came to-Auckland.
