HOSPITAL FEES

DISPUTE AT GISBORNE CHARGES FOR CHILDREN (Special to THE SUN.) GISBORNE, Friday. The Cook Hospital Board is in the throes of battle with the department over the question of children’s fees. The board only charges 2s a day for children, whereas other boards charge 3s 6d. The Director of Health, Dr. Valintine, has repeatedly insisted that the fees should be increased and a section of the board endeavoured, without result, to meet his wishes. At the previous meeting a motion to Increase the fees to 3s was defeated on the casting vote of the chairman. The matter was brought up again at yesterday’s meeting, when a motion to make an increase was again tabled. Supporters contended that it was desirable to meet the department’s wishes, particularly as fees were not demanded when the parents were unable to pay. On the other hand It was asserted that if the fees were raised some people would refrain from sending their children for needed treatment.

Despite the statement that the department might refuse the subsidy if the increase was not made, the motion was again defeated by a narrow margin.
