WHANGAREI HARBOUR

MEETING OF BOARD (From Our Own Correspondent .) WHANGAREI, To-day. At yesterday’s annual meeting of the Whangarei Harbour Board the treasurer reported that cash takings for the month of April amounted to £1,396 9s lid. Accounts passed for payment at the meeting amounted to £691 19s Id, which left a credit balance in the general account of £3,652 4s 5d end £2,431 11s 2d in the loan account. In addition to this there was £16,000 oh fixed deposit. The total tonnage handled in the port during the past month amounted to 17,586 tons — imports 2,030 tons and exports 15,556 tons. It was decided to seek the aid of local fishermen and owners of pleasure era ft in the detection of the illicit taking of sand and shingle from the beaches on the Chickens islands. It was resolved that the Waikaraka and Tamaterau jetties are now so little used that it would be inadvisable to spend money in repairing them. The days of launch services had been auperseded by motors running on the metalled roads.

After discussing the amount of use to which Urquhart’s Bay Wharf was put, it was decided that temporary repairs be authorised. The engineer reported that Mr. flounce, the contractor for removal of the sandstone bar which is the principal obstruction to making *he deepwater port at Kioreroa, had experimented and was satisfied that the work could be done without blasting. His firm was awaiting arrival of plant from Scotland. Wharf and cattle-yards timber at Oakleigh was estimated to be worth £llß. A tender at £35 was declined. After conference with the district engineer of railways, Messrs. Holmes and Johnson reported bright prospects of securing about 2£ miles length of 4A-inch water mains, at present laid between Onerahi and the source of the supply, which has provided for railway requirements. The pipes would suit for the connection between Whangarei Borough and the port at Kioreroa.

A committee was constituted to confer with the Railways Department relative to whether a part of the big wharf at Onerahi should be acquired by the board. Mr. J. C. Finlayson was re-elected chairman and Mr. J. D. McKenzie deputy-chairman. The Works Committee and the Finance Committee ivill be constituted of all the members of the board, with the chairman and two members to form a quorum. The Purchasing Committee will consist of the chairman and Messrs. J. D. McKenzie, R. G. Hosking and J. E. Holmes.
