A Sweepstake

CHARGE DISMISSED “NO HARM AMONG FRIENDS” “I don’t suppose there’s a club in New Zealand where they don’t have a sweep occasionally,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., this morning, when 15 men were charged with being partners to a lottery at Ellerslie on April 15. “ —and other places besides clubs,” said Mr. Allan Moody, who represented the men. “We don’t always get into the clubs, sir,” replied Chief Detective Cummings. “A sweepstake among friends is no harm,” was the magistrate’s opinion. “I’m not going to convict. Dismissed, but don’t do it again!”
