The floor was in excellent condition, and the splendid music rendered by the Syncopaters made the evening go with a decided swing. The pretty decorations and the dainty supper provided were additional attractions, and great credit is due to Mrs. Harris, who organised the pleasant function. Among the many present were the following: Miss J. F. Potter, in dainty frock of apricot georgette, with silver beading. Miss Herrick, gown of delphinium blue floral crepe de chine, with borders of a deeper blue. Aliss Harris, cameo pink satin faille. Aliss Af. Newhan, gown of japonica red satin. Miss F. EX-SERVICE MEN NEW CLUB FORMED AT TAKAPUNA At a meeting of returned soldiers convened at Takapuna on Wednesday evening by Air. Robin David, the formation of an ex-servicemen’s club was unanimously agreed upon. Outlining the objects of the proposed club, Air. David said that it would be primarily a social club, formed to foster a bond of brotherhood among returned men. At the same time the club would do whatever possible to further the interests of returned men, and render assistance where necessary. The ensuring of the proper observance of Anzac Day in the district was also named as one of the aims and objects of the association. It was resolved that the new club be called the “Takapuna Ex-Service Alen’s Club.” Alajor A. L. Cameron was elected president, and vice-presidents were appointed as follows:—Private Crichton, V.C., Alajor A. Wilkie, Captain Algie, and Messrs. N. Donald, G. Malcolm, R. T. Pilkington, A. E. Wilson, A. Al. Gould, L. H. Bowden and R. David. The absence of a war memorial in the borough was the subject of a good deal of discussion, members expressing their regret that so far nothing had been achieved in that respect. The annual subscription was fixed at 2s 6d. CHURCH MEETING ST. JOHN’S. WAIHI (From Our Own Correspondent.') WAIHI, To-day. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. John’s Church was presided over by the vicar, the Rev. E. S Wayne. The balance sheet disclosed a debit, owing to the fact that the parish was without a vicar for some months. The election of officers resulted: Vicar’s warden, E. Durston; church warden, H. B. Dale; vestry, Alessrs. Hurd, Morris, Chilvers, French, Speak, Goodridge and Berry. DICKENSIANS MEET “OLIVER TWIST" EVENING An enjoyable hour was spent with Dickens last evening, when the Auckland branch of the Dickens Fellowship met to hear papers on “Oliver Twist” and dramatic recitations from the book. Air. W. Arey, vice-president, occupied the chair. There was an attendance of over 50 members. Papers were read by Airs. Kealy and Air. G. G. Grant, who discussed, respectively, the origin and purpose of the book and the relation of “Oliver Twist” to the age in which it was written. Mrs. D’Authreau gave a fine rendering of the passage “Nancv.” Airs. Kenneth Gordon recited “Oliver Asks For Alore,” with touching pathos, making the most of a difficult passage. Miss E. AI. Statham’s version of “Air. Bumble Disillusioned,” provided a scene from the lighter side of workhouse life. The brow-beating of Bumble by the “late Airs. Cornery” lost nothing of its sting in Aliss Statham’s impression of the part. The programme concluded with a remarkably vivid characterisation of “Fagin in the Condemned Cell/' by Air. Tom Vivian.- The items were arranged by Mr. J. W. Kealy. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Hayward for entertaining the fellowship on the occasion of the Pickwick centenary.
