“THE BEST PEOPLE”
FINE CHARACTERISATION A notable characterisation in “The Best People,” the Carroll comedy now being presented at His Majesty’s Theatre, is that of the chauffeur, by Robert Adams. To-night and tomorrow’s matinee will be the last presentations of the comedy. Mr. Adams is a young American actor of considerable ability. The effeminate role which he assumes in “Meet the Wife,’” the company’s next production, is in marked contrast to the cave-man chauffeur in “The Best People.” The story of “The Best People” is a revelation of the wilfulness of the young generation of an aristocracy which shudders at the thought of any of its members marrying beneath their particular social strata. The son and daughter of wealthy parents select as their respective mates a chorus girl and a chauffeur, and the efforts of the distracted parents and relations to break off these “horrible” engagements provide situations for delightful comedy and snappy, pert, and piquant dialogue. Each character presents a distinct type, and great care had to be exercised by Mr. E. J. Carroll in selecting the company, the members of which are mostly newcomers, including Miss Marian Lord, Mr. William Macauley, Miss Helen Audiffred, Mr. J. B. Rowe, Miss Marion Sterly, and Mr. Dick Ehlers, together with the old favourites. Miss Beatrice Day, Mr. LaneBayliff. Miss Eileen Morris, and Mr. Reginald Collins. Only one matinee will be given on Saturday, and the box plans for the entire season of “The Best People” are now on view at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd.
