INDIAN’S BATTLE WITH THIEF

HELD HIM TELL HELP CAME-AND DID NOT LOSE HIS GRAPES ATA ALI is only a slightly built young Indian, but he wasn’t going to let Charles Stephen Toomey steal two pounds of his grapes last night and get away with it. His boy was in his Hobson Street fruit shop when Toomey came in, bought sixpenn’orth of pears and helped himself to the grapes. On hearing what had happened the Indian fruiterer promptly sent for the police. Toomey proceeded to make himself scarce, but Ata Ali was one too many for him, in spite of the difference in size. He closed with the burly Toomey and as a result received two punches in the face. In spite of this he hung on until help arrived and Toomey was handed over to a constable’s care. In the Police Court this morning Twoomey, who is 37, was charged with assault in addition to the theft of the grapes and fined £2 or seven days, with costs, including that of the interpreter who assisted Ata Ali to lay his wrongs before the court.
