TEACHERS’ TRAINING
THE INSTALMENT PLAN INSTITUTE’S STRONG PROTEST (Special to THE STJNO WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The New Zealand Educational Institute, through its executive, takes strong exception to the proposal of the Minister of Education to deduct by instalments from the future salaries of teachers the cost of their training. A pronouncement to this effect has been issued by the executive. The institute agrees with the Minister in his view that the loss caused by some teachers not fulfilling the terms of their bond should be avoided. It is not prepared, however, to suggest how this should be done —whether by a more stringent bond or a more rigorous enforcement of the present one. Its main object is to point to the probable deterioration of candidates for the teaching profession should the Minister’s proposals be carried out. Of late years there has been a much higher standard of entrants though previously the applicants were mostly those who failed to obtain other work. The improvement was undoubtedly owing to the better pay and other inducements offered. The pronouncement of the executive went on to state that in the teaching profession there were very few “plums’ or w'ell-paid positions to be aspired to after years of service. Consequently the thinning of the emoluments in the early years of service would it of its chief attraction to eligible voung men and women.
