In the City Auction marts cauliflowers are bringing 3d to 1s 3d each; cabbages, 1s 6d to 5s a dozen. Good dessert apples or pears can be bought from 7s to 8s a case; choice varieties bring higher prices and inferior grade cookers bring from about 4s 6d upward. Hen eggs in the mart bring 3s 5d to 3s 6d a dozen; duck eggs, 2s 11d to 3s a dozen; good farmers' butter, 1s to 1s 2d. In the fish shops, kippered fillets are retailed at 1s a lb.; smoked blue cod, 1s 9d a lb.; rabbits, 10d each, or 1s 6d a pair; fresh schnapper and mullet, 6d a lb. Cash over the counter will get a sirloin of beef at 8d a lb.; minced beef, 4d a lb.; dripping, 6d a lb.; fillets of veal, 10d a lb.
