LITTLE INTEREST IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION
BOARD MEETING LAPSES “There is no quorum present and I do not intend to go on with the meeting,” said Mr. H. S. W. King, chairman of the Board of Governors of the Seddon Memorial Technical College at 2.45 p.m. yesterday when only five members out of the twelve on the board had made their appearance a quarter of an hour after the time appointed for the commencement of the meeting. Apologies were received from some members, but in the case of others no application for leave of absence had been made to the chairman. One gentleman whose time had been wasted took the trouble to turn up the provisions of the Act under which the board was constituted, and detailed the clauses relating to the absence of members from board meetings. The section which .interested him stated that, in the event of a member refraining from attending meetings without leave of absence or apology for a period of three months, he shall lose his seat. However, no one on the board in question has yet qualified for the forfeiture of his place thereon. This is the second consecutive meeting of the governors at which no quorum was present, but on the previous occasion the chairman went ahead with the business as there was only one member short of the requisite seven. “I contend that the quorum of this board was made too large,” observed Mr. King, “three is allowed by the Act and five would be reasonable in this case. Mr. King said he would bring the matter of the reduction of the quorum before the next meeting, which is arranged for Wednesday morning at 11.30 a.m.
