GROWING TOBACCO FOR EXPORT
PRODUCERS ASK GOVERNMENT TO GIVE GUARANTEE (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Representations were made to the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, to-day by members of the Tobacco Growers’ Association of Nelson, together with the Instructor of Tobacco Culture in the Department, to discuss the prospects of the Nelson tobacco leaf as an export product. One of the questions raised was that of a Government guarantee. There is a guarantee at present, but negotiations as to the alteration of the amount are being made. It is learned that, generally speaking, the tobacco venture in Nelson has been quite successful, resulting in an appreciable quantity of bright yellow and lemoncoloured kiln-dried leaf available for export, together with a fair quantity of good shed-dried tobacco, totalling approximately ten tons. It is believed that this quantity will be sufficient to give some idea of the value of the New Zealand leaf on the London market. Grading, conditioning and packing are still in progress and it is anticipated that this will be completed in approximately six weeks’ time, when the tobacco will be shipped Home.
