DETERIORATED LANDS
DIFFICULTIES OVER RATES APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT (Special to THE SUN.') WANGANUI, To-day. The present economic position is serious for the farmers, who are trapped between increased interest on mortgages and rates, the result being that they have no money to spend on the land, which is deteriorating very fast. This, obviously, is being reflected in the finance of the county councils, which are unable to collect rates for roe ding purposes, and to have the matter thrashed out a conference was held here yesterday, delegates attending from Wanganui, Taranaki and King Count-y districts. They carried a resolution asking the Government to give special subsidies to counties having deteriorated lands on a basis of £ for £ on the cost of the maintenance of roads giving access to deteriorated lands. Mr. Veitch. M.P., urged the conference to send delegates to meet the Government, when Parliament opens and this course was decided upon, and it is hoped he Government will be able to give some relief in the direction •uggested.
