“A Live Minister”
HON. R. A. WRIGHT PRAISED GIFTS CONFERRED (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Ministers of the Crown usually get presentations when they open buildings and public works, but rarely do they receive personal gifts, so that, at the opening of the new Christchurch Teachers’ Training College, the Hon. R. A. Wright was provided with two surprises. The first came when after the Minister had declared the college open, Mr. W. P. Spencer, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, said that Mr. Wright was a “live” Minister and did not sit up in Wellington, and that the board wished to make him a small presentation. He handed Mr. Wright a cardboard package, which, when opened, was found to contain a handsome fountain-pen. The Minister thanked the board heartily, and said jestingly that at first he thought that he had another key, his collection of which resembled that of a medieval gaoler. The second surprise came at afternoon tea time, when Mr. J. E. Purchas, principal of the college, presented the Minister with a silver badge of the arms and motto of the college, at the same time conferring upon him “the freedom of the college.”
