PRICES AT WESTFIELD BIG CATTLE YARDING Again this week cattle were yarded in large numbers at Westfield. There was an average y'arding of sheep. The usual butchers’ demand was registered, and practically' the whole of the y-arding was sold under the hammer. CATTLE The big y-arding of cattle was again responsible for bidding tending to drag toward the close of the sale, but several pens of exceptionally well-finished beef were keenly sought after. Extra heavy prime steers made from £ll 10s to £l2 ss; heavy prime steers, £lO 5s to £ll 7s 6d: medium killable sorts, £7 15s to £lO 2s 6d; extra prime young cows and heifers, £7 to £7 15s; prime cows and heifers, £5 15s to £6 17s 6d; medium sorts. £4 10s to £5 12s 6d; lighter just killable sorts, £3 to £4 7s 6d. Inferior quality animals predominated in a rather short yarding of vealers and prices were maintained at last week’s rates. Runners made £ 2 8s to £4 14s; heavy vealers, £2 10s to £3 11s; medium, £1 18s to £2 9s; light, £1 12s to £1 17s: rough and plain, 10s to £1 Is; small and freshdropped, 3s to 10s. SHEEP Spirited competition for sheep maintained values at late rates. Prime wethers made from 26s to 28s; unfinished wethers, 18s to 23s 3d; prime ewes, 19s to 21s; prime lambs, 24s to 26s 6d; unfinished lambs, 13s to 17s. PIGS Pigs came forward in large numbers. A good demand existed for baconers and quotations show an improvement. Values for porkers were inclined to ease. Choppers realised £2 10s to £4 for extra heavy; extra heavy prime baconers, £3 12s to £3 15s; medium, £3 7s to £3 10s; light, £3 2s to £3 ss; heavy porkers, £2 15s to £3; medium, £2 10s to £2 14s, light, £2 6s to £2 9s; small and unfinished, £1 16s to £2 4s; stores sold readily at £2 to £2 6s; smaller, £1 14s to £1 18s; weaners, 10s to 18s: (462 pigs sold). PRICES AT HAMILTON A poor demand was registered for inferior quality cattle at this week's Hamilton stock sale, reports the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, Ltd. Prime cows and lieifers met with good competition, while there was a fair demand for fat sheep. The firm quotes: Prime fat young cows and heifers. £6 to £6 18s; ordinary' fat cows, £4 7s to £5 Ss; plain fat cows, £3 12s to £4 4s; dairy cows, £5 to £9 15s; heavy fat wethers, £1 9s; medium fat wethers, £1 5s 8d to £1 6s; light fat wethers, £1 3s 6d; aged store ewes, 8s 9d. PEDIGREE JERSEYS HEIFERS AVERAGE OVER 33GNS. (Prowl Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. Satisfactory prices were realised at the combined sale of pedigree Jersey cattle conducted at Hamilton yesterday by Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., and Abraham, Wililams Ltd., on account of Mr. W. H. Miers, the well-known Rototuna breeder, and Mrs B. Donald, of Westmefre (Wanganui), when a line of choice heifers and wellbred bulls was submitted to a good bench of buyers. The offering represented the best blood strains. All the stock were of high quality-. Top price for the sale was realised by' Mr. W. H. Miers’s bull Almadale Chelsea Fox (Sunbeam Sultan 2nd Chelsea Flower), which changed hands at 100 guineas, being disposed of to Mr. H. Hopkins (Hinuera). Two other good bulls of Mr. W. H. Miers sold for 62 and 40 guineas respectively'. Several animals failed to reach the reserve and were passed in. Nine heifers sold on behalf of Mr. W. H. Miers averaged slightly over 33 guineas each, while the lot of 24 heifers submitted by Mrs. B. Donald made an average of a little over 211 guineas each. Almadale Blonde (50 gns.), Sunhill Love Charm (4Sgns.), Almadale Lily (40gns.) were the highest-priced heifers sold by Mr. Miers, while Rosebury Waione made the best price (37gns.) for Mrs. Donald’s offering, which was sold without reserve. ALFALFA HERD TE AWAMUTU, To-day. Mr. F. J. Saxby’s well-known Alfalfa stud of pedigree Jersey heifers and bulls came under the hammer at the farm, on the Hamilton-Ohaupo Road, on Tuesday, when many prominent breeders were present from as far away as Southland. The highest price of the day was 170 guineas and six heifers "went over the 100 guineas’ mark. The average for the 66 heifers sold was 55 guineas. The three “Alfalfa” bulls sold averaged 63 guineas.
