RACING
BY “EARLY BIRD/* Splendid Jumper A very attractive exhibition of jumping was given by Cui Bono over the four big fences on the flat at Ellerslie yesterday morning. Where the opposition is not too strong Cui Bono should win races this winter. Two Good Ones Peter Maxwell and Peter Rosa are Auckland representatives in the Wanganui Steeplechase, to be decided tomorrow. The latter finished second to Llewellyn in the Egmont Steeplechase last Thursday, and was reported to have had nothing the worst of it with the winner at the jumps. Auckland Hurdlers Three jumpers from the Auckland Province will be numbered among the contestants in the Century Hurdles at Wanganui to-morrow, and it will be
surprising indeed if one or perhaps the trio are not among the fighting division when the judge hoves in sight. The horses are Zircon, Day Bell and Rangatahi. Not At Home
“Please note that the names and addresses of my clientele are NOT kept at my office*.’* Notice issued by a penciller in the South. He has learned the necessity of protecting his clients. Surely the modern bookmaker is keeping up with the times, but in any case it is, of course, in his own interests to safeguard his customers. Coming to Hand
The Day Comet —Red Pine gelding Schorr has been moving attractively on the tracks and appears to be in great heart. Not Jumped
Though a good many jumpers were sent over the obstacles at Ellerslie yesterday, Beau Cavalier was not one of the number, his work being a sound gallop over six furlongs. The pace was not fast, but the aristocraticallynamed one went very well. The ’clmser is very well at present, but his stamina will be strongly tested in the Great Northern.
For Hunting Events A new edition to the hunting brigade is the big gelding Glendowie, who is trained at St. Melier’s. Though he has not been sent over the fences at Ellerslie he has been putting in good work on the sand and grass tracks. Better Next Season There is notihng in J. Buchanan’s stable going so evenly as the two-year-old Brampton, for he gallops well when sent along in company with Serang. Brampton’s second to Tea Lady at the Avondale meeting was nothing brilliant, but he should be a better colt next season. He is a halfbrother to Killashandra, who has performed well at pony meetings in New South Wales. Jumpers For Wirigatui
The principal event at the forthcoming JJunedin meeting has attracted the following:—Otago Steeplechase Handicap, of 600 sovs., about three miles and a-quarter.—Adjutor, Birkenella, Blue Hall, Cartoon, Charlatan, Frisco Mail, Galway, Kipling, Master Peter, Maungamoo, Night Raid, Osterman, Pamplona, Ranui, Tuki, Vive Oral Goc .urdler Spelling
Saa. Fera is back in Hawera after being operated on for throat trouble. His owner states that the horse is to have a good spell and it will be the end of the year before he is asked again to carry silk. It is unfortunate to have to the jumping season with this promising horse, who should do w«. u‘ the operation is a success, A -«)ders at Wanganui
v e months ago Auckland horses roat run at Wanganui, winning them seven races. There is strong contingent to repreprovince to-morrow, comireen Bonnet, Modest Bi , l, Subdivision, Peter Rosa, peen, Peter Maxwell, Mount rcon, Day Bell, Rangatahi, l, New Moon and Matinee, a Sultan
,g his recent stay in Egypt, Mr. J. iwcid Walker took a.fancy to Trompeur and asked the owner to put i price on the horse. Mohamed Bey Sultan refused to sell, but, with charac-
teristic generosity, offered the animal as a gift, which was accepted. Mr. Reid Walker made it a condition that the young Egyptian sportsman should take in exchange one of the yearlings which Mr. Walker is sending out to the East in the autumn. Off To Sydney Again The Waikato owner-trainer, H. L. Russell, is contemplating another trip to Sydney with Siaosi, Berinthia and Mount Marta after the June meeting in Auckland. Siaosi struck himself recently and is being spelled. Otaki Entries The following are the entries for the principal event at the Otaki meeting: Degage, Gleninnis, Indian Sage, Modern, Black Mint, Diogenes, Shining Armour, Gardant, Tresham, Merry Damon, Diamond Ring, Lady Anstruther, Merry Day, Blue Peter, Matinee, Road Hog, Rouex, Ardfinnan, Captain Gazeley, Othon. Was Colt Doped? Paleta is having a spell in the paddock. It was learned from W. H. Dyer at Hawera that although he could find no proof, he had reason to suspect that the two-year-old had been doped in Sydney. His condition and form were so utterly wrong.
An Attractive Jumper Nothing has been jumping better on the Wanganui tracks in essays over the battens than Attractive, and a Wanganui writer expects that the Absurd —Finery gelding will play a not unimportant part in the decision of the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles to-morrow, in which he has an impost 21b. above the minimum. Comical Jumps Well With Wallace Young as pilot, Comical was sent over the Wanganui coun try on Thursday morning and gave ± splendid exhibition of “lepping.” The obstacles he negotiated were the hencoop, the brush, the double at the back, the log fence and the first two fences again. Apparently yesterday’s schooling by Comical at Wanganui can be discounted. Zircon Will Be Ha That more will be heard of Zircon before long was evidenced by the manner in which the Merry Moment gelding finished in the Tongahoe Hurdles on Thursday and then won in convincing style on Saturday, comments a Wanganui writer. It should not be forgotten that Zircon was third in the last Great Northern Hurdles and won the Panmure Hurdles, 12 miles, under 11.4 at the same fixture, which, in conjunction with his second and third ar the Wanganui meeting twelve months ago, entitles him to respect in the Century Hurdles and other important engagements.
