IS AUCKLAND PREPARED? HOSPITAL BOARD WARNED BEDS TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE JN a city the size of Auckland, A according to Mr. M. J. Coyle, some provision should be made in view of the ever-present possibility of an epidemic. “Can you tell me if any beds are available in the event of an epidemic?” Mr. Coyle asked the Auckland Hospital Board chairman, Mr. W. Wallace, last night. There should be a special ward, If necessary, he contended, and the board should make adequate provision whether or not it meant an increase in rates. “If you do not there will be difficulties ahead,” Mr. Coyle warned the chairman. Mr. Wallace explained that in the event of an epidemic the wards in the old wooden building could be made available; this provided an additional 70 beds. “But I thought you -were going to pull the wooden building down?” said Mr. Coyle. The chairman admitted that such was the board’s ultimate intention. Mr. Coyle: We should make provisisn. That is what the people will tell us if there is an epidemic. It is easy to be wise after the event.
