PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD
The ordinary meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board was held on Tuesday, May 17. Present: Mr. A. W. Hall (chairman), Messrs. J. Franklin, W. Brown, W. J. Nicholson, G. Foster, P. Pennell, E. Sorensen.
The foreman's report was submitted, reporting the completion of the path on Great South Road, excepting in front of Wallace’s garage: tarring of paths for Mr. Ernest and Mr. J. Franklin; and the delivery of 145 yards of scoria to Birdwood Avenue. The works committee and engineer were instructed to report on the approaches to the Great South Road from Kolmar and Station Roads. The chairman of the Works Committee (Mr. Sorensen) reported that the proposed work in the board’s area had been reduced to £714, a reduction of £2OO on the first estimate. Mr Nicholson, chairman of the Finance Committee, stated that the cost of the estimated works would leave roughly £2OO for contingencies, and he recommended that the estimate of new works be approved. It was decided to instruct the engineer to take the permanent levels in Birdwood Avenue.
The engineer reported the completion of the Great South Road, and that everything was satisfactory with the
exception of some of the expansion joints, which needed a coating of bitumen. It was also reported that the final payment from the lighways Board for its contribution towards the cost of the Great South Road concrete work had been received. A communication was received from the Papatoetoe Beautifying and Progressive League asking permission to plant trees in Landscape and Wallace Roads, and Mr. Haddock, president, attended, and asked the board to forward plans of the area in front of the Presbyterian church, and also the parks area, so that the society and board could work together in beautifying the areas.
The board expressed appreciation of the league’s efforts, and gave the necessary authority to proceed with the work, the distance from the water channel to be decided on by the Works Committee. A donation of £2 2s was authorised for the Workers’ Educational Association.
The chairman reported chat definite arrangements were to he made with Mr. McLaughlin regarding the water supply for the district. Mr. Jones reported on the scheme, and recommended that this source be tried. The chairman was authorised to enter into preliminary arrangements with Mr. McLaughlin’s solicitors. The chairman of the Finance committee submitted the balance sheet for the year ending March 31, showing a balance of £961 17s lOd. Mention was made of the amount of outstanding rates, over £2OO. It was decided to write to qll whose rates were outstanding -up to 1926 asking for a settlement by June 20, other -
wise the matter would be placed in the hands of the solicitor.
It was reported that the amount of £22 12s had been deducted from Bray's account for the footpaths done by the board’s men on the Great Soutli Road.
It was decided to approach Mr. AlcLennan, M.P. for the district, to visit Papatoetoe and review the requirements of the district for his supervision while in Wellington. It was decided that the board oppose the erection of three shops on a 49ft frontage on the corner of Wallace and Station Roads.
