THE ROAD-MAKERS

It is said the Carthaginians were the first people to use a system of roadpaving. The Egyptians also constructed a form of road for the transport of the huge blocks of stone of which their pyramids were built; but the Romans were the most famous road-makers of olden times and some of their roads still exist in good condition. The first great Roman highway was built by Appius Claudius, the censor of Rome in 312 B.C. It was called the Appian Way, and was gradually extended all over Rome. The ruins of this great road are still to be seen. This alone will prove how well and strongly constructed it must have been.

All the Roman roads were very solid indeed, being made of different layers of stone, gravel and other materials, the top layer being formed of blocks of stone which were firmly fitted together The Romans also built good roads in Britain, and parts of the great North Road, which once ran from where London now stands to the North of England, still remain.
