ESSEX VICTORY

FIVE WICKETS MARGIN N.Z. BATTING FAILS ON WET WiCKET VECTORS HAVE NARROW ESCAPE ON a wet, tricky wicket, the New Zealand team, in its second innings, did not make a distinguished stand against Essex at Leyton. The innings yielded 208 runs, and Essex in their second strike equalled the New Zealand total for a loss of five wickets and won the match. The wicket was a bad one for batsmen and Essex were only saved by the stand of L. C. Eastman. Blunt bowled well, taking four wickets for 29 runs.

By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The New Zealanders were unlucky to face a wet wicket, which was rendered tricky by the hot noon sun. Play was resumed at 1.45, Nichols bumping riskily. One hit Dempster on the chest. He and Lowry made the pluckiest stand, the wicket slightly assisting the spin bowlers. After Lowry was stumped, while jumping to drive O’Connor, Dempster plodded on gamely, but had no support except from Oliver. The pace of the wicket seemed to puzzle Dacre, who was never comfortable. He went out through mistiming a full toss. Dempster, who was severe on the off-side, hit six clinking fours in his first 50. Eastman saved Essex from disaster when Blunt was bowling splendidly. The stolid Douglas finally clenched the victory. Blunt bowled four maidens out of 13 overs. NEW ZEALAND First Innings 239 Second Innings R. C. Blunt, b O’Connor 21 J. E.
