WOMEN’S WEEK
N.Z. MADE PREFERENCE LEAGUE A meeting was held yesterday afternoon of the executive committee of the Xew Zealand-made Preference League, when the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell* presided. Mrs. A. Kidd and Miss B. Carnachan were present representing the National Council of Women. The details attaching to the Women’s Week which it is proposed to hold during June were fully discussed, and it was decided that Thursday and Friday, June 16 and 17, should be made special days, on which efforts shall be made to arouse interest in New Zea-land-made goods and to augment the membership of the Preference League. The League has for its object the making of New Zealand a self reliant and prosperous country through the development of its primary and secondary industries to the fullest extent,
and hopes through the development of those industries and the use in New Zealand of the commodities produced here, to abolish to a great extent the unemployment that exists to-day.
On both the 16th and the 17th of June a convention will be held at the Town Hall which it is hoped will attract the attention of many women. Here there will be numerous displays of New Zealand-made goods that are of special interest to womenfolk, displays of clothing and food and household articles particularly, and too, there will be a unique mannequin parade, when a number of mannequins will appear in an attractive pageant of New Zealand-made clothes.
Refreshments, made from locallyproduced materials, will be cooked on the premises in New Zealand produced ranges and cooking apparatus and will be served at a nominal charge. There will also be an interesting group qt' speakers, including prominent members of the clergy, representatives of every shade of political opinion and other men whose views will be interesting in the extreme.
Badges will be sold at the Town Hall and in the streets at Is each, and every purchaser of a badge shall become an associate member of the League. On the Friday a big drive will be held in the city on the same lines that the Poppy Day collection is organised, when ladies will be in charge of stations throughout the city. About 30 window displays of New Zealand products have been arranged to be held in various shop windows in Queen Street during the week, and the management of the Majestic Theatre has offered to stage a special “New Zealand Maid” interlude, to be arranged by Mdlle. Valeska.
It was decided that the • entire arrangements for the street appeal should be in the hands of the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, and that if possible literature outlining the objects of the League should be distributed by the badge sellers. A further meeting to discuss progress was arranged for Tuesday, May 24, to take place in the League rooms, Third Floor, Empire Buildings, Swanson Street, and Mr. W. H. Honey, the organising superintendent, was instructed to write to the secretaries of the various bodies affiliated to the National Council of Women asking them to have their organisations represented at the meeting.
