ELECTRIC CRANES

ERECTION AT AUCKLAND A quarterly conference of railway officials to discuss various questions relating to efficiency was opened this morning at Auckland. Mr. E. Casey, Divisional Superintendent, North Island railways, presided. There were also present: Mr. B. R. Sword, traffic advisor to the superintendent: Mr. J. G. Rickerby, District Traffic Manager, Auckland; Mr. H. A. Penn, District Traffic Manager, Ohakune; Mr. P. H. Hartland, District Traffic Manager, Wanganui; and Mr. J. Cameron, District Traffic Manager, ■Wellington.

This morning there was a discussion on the provision of up-to-date facilities for handling goods traffic and the provision of electric appliances (cranes, etc.), in new goods sheds in the larger centres. Big electric cranes will be erected at the new Auckland railway yards under the present scheme, and will facilitate considerably the handling of large quantities--of goods and material.
