NORTHERN PROSPERITY

BIG STOCK INCREASES SOME TELLING FIGURES Press Association DARGAVILLE, To-day. “As showing: the great development which has taken place in the counties situated north of Auckland City, may I quote some very interesting figures which I have had compiled regarding the increase in livestock in recent years,” said the Prime Minister in his speech at Dargaville last night.. “For example,” he continued, “in 1910-11 the number of cattle was 178,240, while in 1925-26 this had increased to 359,884. Pigs in 1910-11 toaled 22,667 and in 1925-26 the number had increased to 44,710. Sheep in 191314 were 460,012, but had increased to 649,666 in 1925-26. “I think you will agree with me that these increases are very striking and illustrate very forcibly the great strides which the farming industry has made in this northern portion of the Dominion. It may also be interesting to note that the greatest number of sheep recorded in the Dominion in one year was in 1918 when 26,538,302 were enumerated. In 1926 the number was 24,904,993, showing that the flocks, which had been largely depleted in the years immediately following the war, are now being satisfactorily built up again.”
