EASY MONEY

BRITISH MERCHANTS SWINDLED The recent adventure of a Birmingham business man who was anxious to find capital to finance an industrial undertaking has been described in the “Daily Mail” in the hope that it may warn others against loss. An advertisement brought a reply from a West End agent who offered to provide £IOO,OOO from a French source, subject to the payment of certain fees. The Birmingham man, his valuer and the agent went to Paris, where they met another Frenchman, who took them to a firm of financiers, described as ex-bankers, who approved the proposals. The French agent asked for £SOO, “to pay for a technical report on the property,” but the Birmingham visitor agreed to pay £IOO and a second £IOO later. Since his return the Birmingham man, who stopped his second cheque, has heard no more about the £IOO,OOO. But he has heard of another Birmingham man who parted with £SOO under similar conditions without getting a penny of capital.
