SUICIDE AT MASS

DUBLIN TRAGEDY GIRL CUTS THROAT While Mass was being celebrated at a Roman Catholic church at Merchants’ Quay, Dublin, Miss Mary Behan, aged 20, of Liffey Road, Chapelizod, a suburb of the city, inflicted a fatal wound in her throat with a razor. The church was crowded and Miss Behan occupied a front seat in the sanctuary at the altar rails. At the end of the last Gospel she lighted two candles before a statue of the Sacred Heart and then, drawing a razor from her handbag, cut her throat. Several members of the congregation saw her produce the razor, but she acted so swiftly that she fell to the floor before anybody could interfere. A priest hurried forward and administered the last rites of the Church, while another called the ambulance. The girl was dead, however, when she reached the hospital.
