MANUREWA SECTION OPEN ANOTHER DETOUR DISAPPEARS A further section of about a mile of concrete, south of Manurewa, was opened on Thursday, obviating the necessity of taking the detour over the old railway track, now private property, which has been costing the Manurewa Town Board £4 a week for the past two months. This removes the last but one of the bad detours, the only other piece of bad road being alongside the Wiri bridge, which is, however, being got into decent order. Practically all the concrete is now open, and in the course of a week or two there will be a concrete strip almost unbroken to Papakura. Two bridges other than the Wiri bridge yet remain to be dealt with — the railway bridge near Manurewa, and the Takanini stream bridge.
It is estimated that the railway bridge will cost £6OO, and the Manurewa Board has yet to decide whether it can find the £3OO considered to be its share. It can find £2OO, and the amount of £IOO will be discussed at a meeting in a few days. Manurewa, Manukau County, and the Highways Board are concerned in the other bridge, which is out of alignment with the concrete, and which it is proposed to alter and bring up to traffic requirements. NEARER THE CITY
There is a prospect that the road between Rockfield Road and Green Park Road, on the Great South Road, between the tram terminus and Penrose, will be closed shortly to enable the formation work necessary for concreting to be satisfactorily dealt with. Concreting started yesterday, but it is expected it will have to be held up for the oessarv formation work, a large amount of filling being necessary. A <rood detour route is available*
