BIRKENHEAD-NORTHCOTE ORPHANS’ CLUB

The success of the Birkenhead and Northcote Orphans’ Club for the ensuing year was assured on Saturday night when a gathering of nearly 200 assembled at the Masonic Hall to start the ball rolling for another season. In greeting old amd new members, the president, Mr. H. D. Boles, extended a cordial welcome to Mr. W. E. Webb, who has taken over the conductorship of the excellent orchestra. An excellent programme was provided by Messrs. Snell, Day, Robinson, Duncan Black, Kennedy, Phil Lewis and Co. and East in songs, Messrs. Yates and McDermont, humorous items, and Mr. Deane, banjo solos. The orchestra rendered a number of delightful numbers including “Light Cavalry,” “The Exalted Ruler,” “Winning Fight” and "Selections from Gilbert and Sullivan.” The mayors of Northcote and Birkenhead were present and extended their heartiest congratulations to the club. Among the guests present were Mr. H. W. Wilson, Northcote town clerk, Mr. Mclnnes, Auckland Club, Messrs. White and Pearce, Otahuhu, Monkton and E. C. Cutten, Takapuna, Sutherland and Osborne, Onehunga. H. S. W. King, Sollit and Gribben, Devonport, and Mr. Norman Heath, president of the Waitemata Bowling Club. Before leaving, the members of the Takapuna Club rendered their chorus, which was much appreciated by the gathering. A hearty vote of thanks was extended to the programme steward, Mr. R. Thompson, and a very pleasant evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lansr Syne.”
