Stole a Battery. —For theft of a battery from the borough power station Victor Edwards was fined £ 5 at the Waihi Magistrate’s Court this morning Railway Transfer. —Mr. R. S. Paisley, stationmaster at Huntly, has received word of his transfer to Wellington under promotion to the goods branch of the head office. Danrevirke’s Telephone Exchange.— Dannevirke’s new automatic telephone exchange was brought into operation on Sunday morning with very satisfactory results. The Bank Rate. —Whangarei County Council has joined the indignant throng of local traders in protesting against the increase in the bank rate It is proposed to communicate with the Local Bodies’ Association. Fire at Taumarunui. —On Saturday evening a four-roomed house at Kakahi, owned by Messr. Watkins Bros and occupied by Mr. Buckley, was destroyed by fire. Nothing was saved Insurances are not available. Timber Industry Active. —The mills of the Whangarei Timber Company are working full time. Next week the s.s. Kaiwarra will be loading 150,000 white pine (Kahikatea) and Kauri, mostly board timber for Sydney and it is anticipated that the loading will be completed in two days. Opotiki Resident’s Death.—One of the most popular residents of Opotiki, Ambrose Vanstone, died at the Public hospital there on Thursday afternoon. Deceased leaves a widower and young children to mourn their loss. The late Mrs. Vanstone was °nly about thirty years of age, and was exceedingly popular.
