HAIRDRESSER FINED FOR BETTING
MAXIMUM PENALTY CASES AT GISBORNE Press Association GISBORNE, To-day. Arthur Owen and Cornelius Patterson were before the magistrate this morning for alleged breaches of the Gaming Act. The former is charged with keeping, opening and using his hairdressers’ premises as a common gaming house, and the latter with assisting to open the premises and to conduct the business. In addition six charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting are preferred against Owen. , Accused pleaded not guilty. Inspector Eccles stated that the prosecution was the result of a raid on May 7. Betting materials were found in the shop and bets would be shown to have been taken at the place. After a short adjournment, Mr. Wauchope, for the defence, said that he had had a conference with the inspector and his client and an arrangement had been made, and he would now- plead guilty on behalf of Owen. When the charge against Patterson w-as called a plea of guilty was entered also. Inspector Eccles asked leave to withdraw- the charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting. The magistrate fined Owen the maximum of £IOO and costs and Patterson £2O and costs.
