“FAIREST SOLUTION”
BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS PARENTS SHOULD DECIDE TAKING OF PLEBISCITE The Bible-in-Schols League's latest move to secure a plebiscite of parents was described by Canon James at St. Mary’s Cathedral last night as “the fairest thing it could do.’* The league was endeavouring to secure a parents’ vote on the bill, said Canon James, throughout the Dominion. A voting paper had been prepared, which was approved of by the Minister of Education (Mr. Wright), and set out fairly and without comment the provisions of the bill. All that was asked was a simple “yes” or “no.” Only one vote would be allowed to each family. “The bill raises an important question. Who shall settle it?” asked Canon James, “Mr. C. E. Major’s Secularist League, the Educational Institute, or the Roman Catholic Hierarchy?” Only five per cent, of the children in the New Zealand State schools, he pointed out. were Roman Catholics The Bible-in-Schols League maintained that the du€!f lay upon the Government to face £WK question resolutely, and to decide It m accordance with the wishes of the people. All that the league was asking for was ordinary fair play to obtain the opinion of parents.
