BITUMEN ROADS
CANTERBURY CONTROVERSY (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Replying to a statement in THE SUN that bitumen-paved roads in the Paparua County have not come up to expectations, Mr. A. D. Paterson, managing director of Brith’s Pavements, Ltd., has taken strong objection to the assertion that one typical undulation in the surface was five-eighths of an inch deep. “I will pay £2OO to the unemployed fund if anyone can prove that they are typical, or bring evidence along to prove it,” he said. He considered the article was unjust and untrue. “It is very unjust to complain of the road,” continued Mr. Paterson, “when the roads here are much better than any in Wellington.” Depressions existed in all city roads and roads all over the world. Fairminded people must realise that bitumen will follow the surface of the road, and where a road dipped it was only natural for bitumen to go down a bit.’
