WAITEMATA COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL PUBLIC WORKS GRANT A meeting of the Waitemata County Council was held yesterday, the chairnan, Mr. G. O’Halloran, presiding. A letter from the Oratia Ratepayers* Economy League referred to the proposed concreting of the WaikumeteWest Coast Road for 3£ miles past Glen 2den. The league requested that until the finding of a commission recently set lip to go into the question was made known, no steps should be taken by the council in the matter. The league considered a macadam road would be more luitable. The chairman said nothing would be done until the finding was made known. It was decided to notify the league to that effect. The applications to be made by the council in connection with the Public Works grants for 1927-28 were discussed. In previous years it had been the custom to apply indiscriminately for grants. The engineer recommended that this system should be altered so that only those grants which had a reasonable chance should be applied for. The total amount available for the whole of the county would probably be in the vicinity of £6,000. There remained on hand authorities to the value of £1,500, which left a balance available of £4,500 or £440 for new work in each riding. It was decided to apply for grants to the value of £450 for each riding. A letter protesting against delay in the re-erection of Bond's Bridge, near Henderson, was received from the Henderson Valley Ratepayers’ Association. The engineer stated that the plans for the structure were already prepared and that as soon as arrange--ments were completed for the raising of special loan money the work would be put in hand. The engineer’s report referred to the delay in the erection by the Takapuna Borough Council of the Inga Road Bridge. It was arranged that the chairman should interview the mayor of Takapuna and urge that the work should be expedited. Referring to representations made by the Glen Eden Town Board that the Waikumete quarry reserve should be set aside as a recreation ground for Glen Eden, the engineer recommended that, in view of the large area of unstable land in the Waikumete riding, the allotment should be sold in building lots and the proceeds of the sale used in buying Glen Eden a recreation ground within the town boundaries. This course was adopted.
