Clothes & Their Details

OUR 30/- DRESS

The Accommodating Mode

The betwixt and between seasons are always just a little bit difficult where clothes are concerned, and more particularly the transition season between autumn and winter.

But already we have had many forerunners of the delightful things that will be le dernier cri when the chilliest days of winter are with us. t rocks still keep their straight lines, but are not so severely plain as they were. Stitchings, pipings and pleats are everywhere in evidence. The stitching and pipings on frocks may show a delightful variety of treatment. They appear diagonally across the full length of the dress front or they may be all round it, with just the suspicion of a tiny lift at the sides to maintain the slim outline. _ Sleeves of outdoor dresses show a diversity of trimmings, new ideas being stitching and bands running down the outsides and in some cases a yoke-like effect coming over the shoulders where the sleeves are set. Contrasting materials are being used largely in a number of the newest frocks that we have seen. Checks of course are still with us, and some intriguing materials we saw recently had a combined pattern of checks and flowers. These should look particularly well when combined with a plain colour. The many varieties of kasha cloth are still popular, while repp is still a best-beloved, and sedan cloth and gabardine continue to hold their own. An attractive new development is a woollen crepe de chine, and another is a “flat” satin —that is, a heavy satin that has been finished with a matt, instead of a shiny surface. This lastnamed fabric drapes charmingly and should be the inspiration of some bewitching frocks.
