HIS MAJESTY’S
“THE BEST PEOPLE” A theatrical event of unusual interest will take place at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening when Mr. E. J. Carroll will present his new company in the world’s comedy success, “The Best People.” This delightful play bears the hall-mark of London and New York and further a record was established by this company playing a season of three and a-half months. Of course it must be remembered that
“The Three Best People” is a comedy far above the average and the success it has achieved in Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and other New Zealand towns testify to this fact. One London critic wrote: “Clean and clever
humour is a scarce commodity in modern comedies, but “The Best People” fs a really clean and clever comedy; one of those smart, well written, well constructed plays that provoke spontaneous laughter like thQ, rapid recurring barks of a. machine gun; it gurgles with frolic-
some fun through three acts of delicious sentiment and hilarious laughter.” It is a laughter show, but it never descends to the ridiculous; it is the genuine laughter of everyday life of a snobbish aristocracy to whom a, marriage out of their select circle is a social calamity. Most amusing are the scenes and dialogue between the snobbish parents and the headstrong son and daughter who desire and demand that they should select their own mates. The newcomers of the company are Mr. Robert Adams, Miss Marian Lord, Mr. William Macauley, Miss Helen Audiffred, Mr. J. B. Rowe, Miss Marion Sterly, Mr. Dick Ehlers, and welcome reappearances will be made by Miss Beatrice Day, Mr. LanBayliff, Miss Eileen Morris and Reginald Collins. The box plan for to-night’s performance is at His Majesty’s Arcade confectionery stall, where day sale tickets may also be obtained.
