ZIMBALIST

PROGRAMME FOR TUESDAY On Tuesday evening at the Town Hall, the celebrated violinist, Efrem Zimbalist, will make his first appearance in New Zealand. The programme selected for the Initial recital covers a wide field of musical thought, and should give the distinguished artist ample opportunity of displaying both his phenomenal technique and his interpretive .ability to the full. Commencing with the A Major Concerto of Vivaldi, one of the 150 vioiin concertos left by this contemporary of Bach and Handel, the violinist will be heard in a characteristic example of the simple, elegant and unsophisticated style of seventeenth century music. Then follows a suit on Norwegian Folk Tunes by Christian Sinding. Although overshadowed in popular estimation by his countryman, C.reig, Sinding has generally been considered by Norwegians as the greatest interpreter of Norse music. Undoubtedly the “piece do resistance” of the programme is the picturesque Spanish Symphony of Edouard Lalo, a composer, who, although almost unnoticed during his lifetime, has become extraordinarily popular during the last few years. In many of his works, particularly in the Spanish Symphony, can be detected the germ of the "exotic” movement which had its flowering in the music of Debussy and Ravel. The Spanish Symphony has been played here by at least two of the world's great violinists and Mr. Zimbalist's interpretation of this work will be awaited with particular interest. Other Items on the programme will include a group .of Spanish dances by Spain's great virtuoso of the violin, Pablo de Sarasate and the Polish Dance by Zimbalist. As might be expected, the last nurnbers are particularly brilliant, and, in the hands of a virtuoso, may be said to exhibit every technical resource of which the violin is capable. Zimbalist’s Auckland season will be limited to three concerts- —on Tuesday. Thursday and Saturday of next week. The box plans- are at Lewis K- Eady and Son, Ltd.
