Billy Grime Lacked Condition
FIGHT WITH SNELL EXPECTED A DRAW By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LOS ANGELES, Thursday. The feather-weight boxer “Doc” Snell, who is a druggist at Tacoma, gained the decision in a 10-rounds contest against the Australian Billy Grime in one of the greatest fights ever witnessed at the Olympic Autditorium.
Snell, with a terrific two-fisted attack, had the Australian on the canvas four times in the first three rounds. Grime made a splendid recovery, which won him many followers in his initial effort in the American ring.
Snell went for Grime from the bell in his usual dynamic manner, and sent him to the floor with a right to the chin. Grime bounced to his feet without taking the count.
The second round was even at first, but Snell got Grime again and knocked him down a second time. Grime stumbled to his feet, only to go down again, but the bell saved him. Snell again sent him down for the fourth time in the third round by hooking him when the gong sounded. After that the Australian fighter started to come back in a sensational manner. The fourth round was even.
Grime gave more than he took during the next three rounds by a narrow margin. The eighth was even, and Snell, who had been missing his man, finished strongly and took the ninth and tenth rounds with a slight margin, and won the fight.—A. and N.Z. “Snell is really a rugged lightweight,” said Billy Grime, in an interview with the Australian and New Zealand Press Association, “and in this my first American appearance while I lost the referee’s decision every ringside critic has agreed that a draw would have been very fair. 'I took every session after the fourth round. I am ready to meet any featherweight in the world to defend my claim as world’s champion. While several more bouts are in immediate prospect, I desire in the meantime to become thoroughly acclimatised before my next fight. It was condition that seriously hampered me in my bout with Snell.”—A. and N.Z.
