RANGER TO REPORT ON DISTRICT RIVERS
ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY (From l Our Oxen Correspondexit.') HAMILTON, Friday. The quarterly meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society was held in Hamilton last night. A discussion took place on the breeding of pheasants, objections being made to private enterprise in that connection. The Taumarunui representative said fishing had been bad for the past three years in his district. He attributed that to the effects of the heavy floods. The ranger was instructed to report on the principal rivers in the society’s district, with a view to improving the fishing, inquiring into the method of angling and the necessity for restocking and closing. Mention was made of the hawk pest in the Putaruru district.
A resolution was carried to the effect that while approving of the system of issuing short-period licences at Taupo for those not regular fisTiermen, the executive was of opinion that the fees for the whole season were inequitable in comparison among the three divisions of anglers, and in the establishment of several fishing districts. These fees should be replaced by an annual charge of 30s for the whole Dominion, with decreased rates for ladies and children, the Government receiving onethird of the revenue to be applied toward territorial fishing rights and general acclimatisation purposes. It was decided to request the Minister to preside at the conference of societies during the close of the fishing season, to adjust fees. Duck poaching by Huntly natives was reported.
