CAN MARIST WIN?
“Tykes” May Up-End Shore, But Chances are the Other Way TO-MORROW’S LEAGUE GAMES REVIEWED THE star attraction at Carlaw Park to-morrow will be tlie match between Marist and Devonport:. It is whispered that the “Tykes” may spring a surprise. But on last Saturday’s games, the odds look to be in Devonport’s favour.
Marist was not given much credit in some quarters on Saturday for defeating Athletic, which was considered too light for the heavy Marist team, but this team is by no means as weak as some of the critics think. With a little improvement, it will keep the best of them busy before the season is far advanced.
Brisbane played his first game since bis return from England for Marist last Saturday. This fine player should soon bo back to his best form. As far
as Gregory is concerned, he is right at the top of his form.
HARD TO BEAT It was no disgrace for Devonport to be defeated by City last week. It was a great game, and two of the “soft” scores gained by the trans-harbour men were counterbalanced by a couple of slices of ill-luck with easy shots in front of the posts. On form, Devonport will be very hard to beat tomorrow.
Ruby was missed from the Shore pack on Saturday, through an accident at the gas works. He will not be playing for a few weeks yet. Perry, who was replaced by Webb at full back for Shore on Saturday will most liikely be seen out with Athletic. Webb played a fine game last Satur-
day. He was the outstanding back, and Dixon, who was always in the thick of it, might be given the same honour in the forwards. A WISE STEP The League has certainly got an eye to the advancement of the game by
placing the Ponsonby-Newton game on Grey Lynn Park to-morrow. It is a move in the right direction. There has not been a big game staged at Grey Lynn yet, and this match is sure to draw a big crowd. It will give the people an opportunity of seeing the 13-a-side game played as it should be played.
Ponsonby will be playing its first game of the season, and this team will be watched with a good deal of interest. The “Ponies” are reported to have a very strong side, and they are confident that they can hold their own with the best of them. In defeating Richmond on Saturday, Newton showed greatly improved form, and will be a hard nut to crack. Nobody will begrudge them all the success that comes their way, as they have been battling along for years. Poison will most likely be seen out again before very long, but it is doubtful if he will be able to oust the promising young half that Newton now possesses, as the boy is showing remarkable improvement. DUFTY SHINES Dufty, one of the best all-round backs in the code, got his transfer from Athletic to Newton, and signalled his advent with his new club by playing a great game. It is reported that “Wally” Somers is sorting out his togs again. ’Tis said that next week will see him in the thick of the fray again. After a surprise defeat by Newton on Saturday last, there is no saying what Richmond will do to-morrow. In being drawn against City, last year’s winners of the League’s chanticleer, have a stiff battle ahead of them. Last year, they were a team of keen, young players who deserved their success, and if the same keenness is repeated this year, they should soon be back to their best form. ‘TROUBLES NEVER COME SINGLY' On top of the mild stir created in League circles by definite advice regarding the offers made to the City stars, Brown and Davidson, by English League clubs, comes word that Townsend, the City hooker, is contemplating leaving shortly for Christchurch. Rumour has it that he will most likely be seen out in the Southern teams before the season is far advanced. To counter-balance things, it is worth noting that E. Hadley, who has returned from Rugby, played a great game for City last week. Athletic has the bye to-morrow. Among their team last week was Hudson, the Auckland sprint champion, who was making his first appearance for the club in senior football. His pace gave him a brilliant try last week.
Stevenson of the same team is a very promising young player, who has
been brought up from junior grade. He showed his ability to play big football last week. CURTAIN-RAISER MATCH A curtain-raiser to the big match at Carlaw Park to-morrow will be played at 2 p.m. between M. 0.8. and Akarana. As splendid football is invariably seen in this grade this game should be no exception to the rule. The Marist Old Boys thirteen has nine players who played for the Marist Bros.’ team last season, which won the primary schools’ championship.
