OPENING OF SEASON Thirty-two players took part in a lightning tournament which opened the Auckland Chess Club’s season on Saturday evening. Four rounds were played, those scoring 2\ points qualifying for the final knock-out rounds. The following qualified.—Layland, Ewen, Putman, Cayne, James, Earle, Miles, Miller, Grierson. Turner, Stubbs, Davies and Fotheringha m. In the fifth round, Ewen defeated Layland. Putman defeated Cayne, James defeated Earle. Miles defeated Miller. Turner defeated Grierson, and Davies defeated Stubbs; Fotheringham a bye. The sixth round resulted—Ewen defeated Fotheringham. Miles defeated Turner, Davies and James a draw, Putman a bye. In the sixth round James defeated Putman, Davies defeated Miles, Ewen a bye. In the semi-final Ewen defeated James, Davies a bye. In the final Davies defeated Ewen. Total scores were as follow: Davies won 6A, lost 1A; Ewen, won 6, \ lost 2; James wuq 6, lost 2.
