HELD IN TURKEY
MOTORISTS’ ADVENTURE ARRESTED BY ARMED GUARD LONDON, Wednesday. Now that Messrs. Ellis and Birtles, the motorists, are at last clear of Turkey it is permissible to reveal the annoyances and obstruction they suffered at the hands of Turkish officialdom en route to Beyrout. After being informed that they could deviate to avoid the shocking roads, so long as they did not go near the Ismid naval base, the motorists were stopped by the gendarmes and taken to Ismid by armed guards in a of open arrest. * After that, Ellis, as leader was prisoner and could not move night or day without escort, while waiting the Angora Government’s decision by letter. He says Birtles was threatening murder if a hair of my head was touched.
Messrs. Ellis and Birtles are motorists who left London with the intention of driving to Sydney.—A. and N.Z.
