THE ONE GAP
ROUND-THE-ISLAND HIGHWAY MOTORISTS AND MOTU “A length of ten miles between Motu 1 anti Gisborne is the one gap in the round-the-island highway,” the Automobile Association Council was told last evening. 'The settlers in the county are unfinancial and many of them are abandoning, so that they cannot pay a share of the cost of forming and metalling the clay section,” the president (Dr. Lawry) told the meeting. This section is most important as being on the main road between Auckland and Gisborne, and is closed throughout the winter months. It was suggested that the" association should press for the spending of the motorists’ money on the road. A SERIOUS ASPECT "This is a serious matter this question of motorists’ money,” stated Mr. S. Grayston. “They are spending our money here and there, giving £ 3 for £1 on maintenance, and you will find that before very long we will have more taxation. I think where a county is not able to provide its share of a road the Government should be called on to meet a share. We have to be very careful.” The meeting decided to ask the Highways Board to recommend that the road to Motu be declared a Government road, meaning that the Govern ment be asked to undertake to provide a portion of the cost of the necessary repairs and metalling.
