A GRIEVANCE?
DUNEDIN WANTS CHAMPIONSHIP
Dunedin golfers have a grievance. At the presentation of prizes after the Otago Easter tournament, Mr. E. J. Hocking spoke very strongly about the treatment meted out to the Southern golfers by the New Zealand Golf Council in refusing the repeated requests for a New Zealand amateur championship at Balmacewan. It fs 14 years since the championship was played there and Otago intends to make an effort to secure the fixture at an early date.
The question is: What has Dunedin done to deserve a championship** For years practically its only representative has been Dr. Ross and the prospects of more representatives is very remote. Why should the North Island golfers, who provide practically all the championship competitors, go further South than Shirley?
Moreover, Balmacewan, as I have previously remarked, is not a presentday championship course. Of its IS holes 14 are quite blind, or blind for one or more shots and that’s not a course for championships.
