HITTING THROUGH

To get the real knack of hitting through the ball with the club-head instead of with the body it is well for any golfer to give a few minutes of practice to this important phase of the forward swing. And a very good way to practice it is this: Stand with the weight about equally divided on your feet. Now place the club in the top of back swing position. From here, determine to stay right on your feet, then swing the club forward, into the imaginary ball and through that spot as far as you can reach. Observe how the right shoulder goes in after the clubhead, though the head stays still. Try this, reaching farther and farther, until you attain the limit of reach. Then note that after you have reached out after the ball as far as possible, your right ear is just about turned toward the spot where the ball was when your swing is finished. Note, too, how the clubhead speeds up when you hold the head still. Holding the head still means, of course, that you have taken the body press out of the forward swing.—Chester Horton.
