Gisborne Jubilee. —The weather was dull and unpromising for the second day of the Gisborne jubilee celebra-
tions. but the town was beflagged and decorated, and crowded with visitors.
Naval Conference. —The Naval Disarmament Conference between repre-
sentatives of Britain, the United States and Japan will be held at Geneva on June 20.
Farewell to Royalty. —The Duke and Duchess of York were enthusiastically farewelled when they passed through Melbourne on their way to the Renown.—A. and N.Z.
Confusion in Names. —lt has been proposed to avoid confusion by altering the name of Frankton Junction to Hamilton West. Strangers are frequently unaware that Frankton is part of Hamilton town.
Hamilton Sanitation. —The borough engineer states that it will be necessary to provide better sanitation for Hamilton septic tanks. He is submitting a report.
Vatican Legation. —Sir Austen Chamberlain, Foreign Secretary, in replying to Viscount Sandon in the House of Commons, said that the Government had no intention of withdrawing its Legation from the Vatican.
Missing Airmen. —There is still no news of the missing French airman Captain Nungesser and his navigator X l . Coli, and Captain Saint Romain. who loft earlier in another plane.
..Civil Aviation in Britain.—Sir Philip Sassoon, Under-Secretary for Air. stated in the House of Commons that the number of private civil aircraft licensed to fly in Great Britain was 138, of these 28 were light airplanes.— A. and N.Z.
“Iniquitous,” says Mr. MacDonald.— “The British Government’s Trades Union Bill is so iniquitous and disloyal that an impeachment of the Baldwin Government for its enactment is justified,” said Mr. Ramsay MacDonald when asked at Philadelphia what his opinion of the bill was.—A. and N.Z.
Caught in Air Pocket. —The funeral of Flying-Officer F. E. Ewen, who was killed in Monday’s airplane crash, took place at Canberra. Ewen, before he died, said that the machine was caught in an air pocket.
Maternity Ward Wanted. —The Minister of Health (Mr. J. A. Ydung) today refused to provide a maternity ward .at King George Hospital, Rotorua. He said it was in the province of the hospital board.
French Communists Punished. —The Correctional Court of Appeal in Paris has sentenced eight Communists, who were charged with espionage, to six months’ imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 francs each. —A. and N.Z.-Sun.
Fire in Hobson Street. —A fire occurred in Hobson Street €-arly this morning, completely destroying one room. Mrs. Duke, the owner and occupier, discovered the fire Sind called the Central Fire Station. The Brigade arrived on the scene a minute later, and soon had the outbreak under control.
A King Country Wedding.— After a Maori couple had been married last Sunday in the backblocks the Maori guests suddenly found out that there was no confetti, so flour was used. It was thrown over the bridal couple in buckets full and warming up to the job water was mixed with the flour, and the pair appeared to have come through a snowstorm.
Tramway I nterruption.—A Herne Bay via College Hill tram left the rails at the intersection of Queen and Customs Streets this afternoon, and considerably disorganised the service. Herne Bay passengers bad to wait for over half an hour. A long tine of cars in Customs Street was a 1 so held up.
Too Many for the Index. —Cardinal Merry del Val, as the secretary to the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, has addressed a letter to the Catholic Episcopacy throughout the world on the subject of improper literature. The number of these books being published in the world is so great that it is impossible to examine all and put them on the Index Expurgatorius. Bishops must undertake the duty of keeping them from their flocks. —A. and N.Z.
