SHIPS’ OFFICERS

SUNDAY-PAY QUESTION JUDGE FRAZER’S RULING An application was recently made for interpretation of the Northern Industrial District Ship Masters and Officers’ Award in relation to whether officers who were employed on an excursion on a Sunday or holiday were entitled to an extra day’s pav under clause 10 because the steamer to run such an excursion of a necessity must leave Auckland on a Sunday or holiday before 5 p.m.

The opinion of the Arbitration Court, as delivered by Judge Frazer, is that in such cases, an extra day’s sea pay is not payable, for clause 7 is complete in itself, and sets out the full compensation to be awarded to masters and officers for the loss of a Sunday or holiday through the running of an excursion.
