Slipped To Death On Egmont Slopes
SCHOOL-MASTER S FATE Press Association. . XA/AKI HAWERA, To-day. WANGANUI College master lost his life on the slopes of Mount Egmont last evening. Messrs. Latham, Baines and Taylor, teachers at Wanganui Colle^ e ’ a Pupil named Dennis Allen, were returning from the summit when one slipped and, being roped together, they all fell. Latham or Baines, it is uncertain yet which, was killed, his head being shockingly mutilated. One of the two is still missing, but it is believed that he crawled toward Opunake. One party crawled to the Mountain House at Dawson’s Falls at 11.15 last night, and gave the alarm. • A search party went out immediately. The body was found about a third of the way between Fantham’s Peak and the summit. Taylor and Allen are safe at the Mountain House, suffering from shock. Taylor is much bruised.
