The Log Book

PERSONAL. —Mr. Matthewson, superintendent at Newcastle for the Union Steam Ship Co., arrived at Wellington on Tuesday by the Maunganui from Sydney. Captain H. Hargreaves, master of the Union Co.’s Wellington tug Natone, has gone on holiday leave. Captain Miller, late chief officer of the Ivairanga, is acting-master of the Natone. Captain F. G. Bilton recomissioned the Kawatiri at Auckland yesterday, and has the following officers with him: Chief, Mr. A. Brown; second, Mr. J. Hargreaves; chief engineer, Mr. A. Sadlier.

Mr. L. Boulton, chief officer of the Guntar, has left the vessel.

Mr. C. Gi Waters, chief officer of the Wairuna, has been granted holiday leave, and Mr. F. W. Evan’s, late of the Sussex, has taken his place.

Mr. W. Falkner has relieved Mr. Jas. Nicholson as second engineer of the Wairuna.

HINEMOA SAILS TO-DAY. Messrs. Spedding, Limited, advise that the Government steamer Hinemoa leaves Auckland at 5 p.m. to-day for Niue Island.

KAIWARRA REPORTS.— According to a radio message received by the Union Company, the Kaiwarra will arrive at Auckland at 10 a.m. to-morrow from Newcastle. She will berth at the Western Wharf.

MARAMA FOR SYDNEY. The Union Company advises that the inter-colonial passenger steamer Marama leaves Auckland at 3 p.m. tomorrow for Sydney, where she is due next Tuesday. TOFUA DUE MONDAY.— CabIe advice reecived by the Union Companystates that the Island steamer Tofua leaves Suva at 4 o’clock this afternoon for Auckland, where she arrives on Monday next.

FROM CALCUTTA. —According to the Union Company the Federal steamer Sussex is due at Auckland on Saturday from Calcutta, via ports, and after discharge here proceeds to Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete.

R.M.S. NIAGARA. —En route from Vancouver, the Union Company’s R.M.S. Niagara was to leave Honolulu yesterday for Suva and Auckland. She is due here on May 23, and sails at 11 p.m. the same day for Sydney. MELBOURNE STEAMER. The Company advises that the Moeraki is expected to clear Melbourne to-day from Wellington direct. She is due there next Tuesday, and will leave the following afternoon for Melbourne, via Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff. POOLTA LOADS FOR AUCKLAND. —The Union Company advises that the Poolta left New Plymouth on Monday afternoon for Clarence River. She will load there and at Port Stevens and Newcastle for Gisborne, Napier, Auckland and Greymouth.

CARGO FROM NEW YORK. —The New Zealand Shipping Company reports that the latest advice regarding departures of A. and A. Line chartered steamers from New York for New Zealand is that the Wirral was to leave the American port on May 7 for Auckland. Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Wanganui. She will be followed by the City of Corinth, which is to sail from New York between June 5 and 10 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff. The City of Brisbane will h tve New York late in June for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin. Hobart and Launceston.

BARQUE’S FAST VOYAGE. The ex-German four-masted barque Herzogin Cecile, which left Port Lincoln, South Australia, on February 3. wheat-laden for the Channel, arrived at Queenstown, Ireland, on May 2, after a splendid passage of 88 days. CARGO FROM MONTREAL.— Under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, the steamer Ikaia is to leave Montreal on May 21 with cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington. Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne and Sydney. She is due at Auckland in J uly. .

SCHOONERS PIRI AND HUIA.— Mr. C. E. Campbell has received advice that the Nobel, auxiliary schooner Piri left Sydney yesterday for Melbourne to load explosives for New Zealand.

The company’s auxiliary schooner Huia left Brisbane on Tuesday for Rockhampton to load a full cargo of coal for Auckland.

ANTONIO WITH CASE OIL FROM TEXAS. —Messrs. Robert Millar and Company advises that the Antonio which left Port Arthur, Texas, on April 2 3 with a cargo of case oil for discharge at New Zealand and Australian ports, cleared Balboa on May 1, and is due at Auckland about May 31. From here she goes on to Napier, Wellington, New Plymouth, Melbourne and Adelaide to complete discharge.

PORT AUCKLAND TO LOAD. The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company has been advised that the C. and D. Line steamer Port Auckland leaves Port Kembla on May 20 for New Plymouth, where she is due on May 24 to commence Homeward loading. From New Plymouth the vessel proceeds to Auckland, May 30 to June 1, thence Tokomaru Bay, Gisborne, Wellington and Wanganui to complete, sailing finally from the latter port on June 16 for London, via Panama.

THE BARON RUTH VEN.— Repairs to the steamer Baron Ruthven, which collided with the hulk Gladbrook last Saturday, will be carried out by the Warren Engineering Company, the contract price being £132. The collision resulted in a hole being driven in the steamer near the port bunker amidships. The damaged part will be repaired with a new 12ft. by 4ft. plate. The work will be completed by the time the steamer finishes discharging at Chelsea on Friday afternoon. The steamer will bunker at Auckland, and from this port will proceed direct to Nauru Island to load phosphates for a destination not announced.

WAIRUNA ARRIVES.— From Pacific Coast ports the Union Company’s transpacific cargo steamer Wairuna arrived at Auckland at 7 o’clock this morning, and after pratique was granted berthed at Queen’s Wharf to land the local portion of her cargo. The Wairuna loa-ded for this voyage at Vancouver, Ocean Falls, Powell River and San Francisco, and cleared the latter port at 11 p.m. on April 14 for Papeete. Fine weather was experienced to Papeete, and the vessel arrived there on April 30. After discharging a quantity of cargo the Wairuna left the next day and good weather still continued with the ship until May 10, when she ran into a south-east gale, with high seas which however, did not affect her speed greatly and the vessel arrived as above.

Captain J. Ryan is still in command of the Wairuna, and has the following officers with him:—Chief, Mr. C. C. Waters; second, Mr. C. HarrisonGeorge; third, Mr. L. B. Elilert; chief engineer, Mr. N. McMurrich: second, Mr. J. A. S. Nicholson: third, Mr D. Culla.n; fourth, Mr. M. Barr; fifth, Mr. J. Longley; wireless operator, Mr. G. B. Fullwood; chief steward, Mr. T. Taylor. The Wairuna is expected to leave Auckland at 5 p.m. to-morrow for Wellington, Melbourne and Sydney to complete her discharge. TAHITI FOR SYDNEY.— The R.M.S Tahiti which sailed from Wellington on Tuesday evening for Sydney took the following passengers:

CANADIAN BRITISHER FROM HAIJIFAX. —An arrival a,t Auckland late last evening was the Canadian Government line steamer, Canadian Britisher, from Halifax. The vessel left the Nova Scotian port on March 26 and put in at Louisberg the next day to load a quantity of steel. She sailed from there on April 2 and arrived at Colon on the evening of April 12. Transit through Panama was granted and the Britisher cleared Balboa next day. Up till the day before yesterday the voyage was made in fine weather and smooth seas. On May 10, however, a moderate southerly gale sprung up, but it did not affect the speed of the vessel to any great extent. The Canadian Britisher travels alternately on Australian and New Zealand voyages, and this is one of the best passages she has made to these waters. Captain J. E. Roop is in command of the vessel and has associated with him the following officers: —Chief, Mr. H. R. Marshall; second, Mr. G. L. Jones; third, Mr. C. B. Martin; chief engineer, Mr. J. B. Steel; second, Mr. H. Rogers; third, Mr. C. Fenech; fourth, Mr. H. Hamelin; wireless operator, Mr. J. Descoteaux; and chief steward, Mr. R. C. Turner.

The local office of the Canadian Government expect to despatch the Citnadian Britisher to-morrow night,or Saturday morning for Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru and Dunedin to complete the discharge of her general cargo and to load for New York, Boston and Montreal. She is due back at Auckland towards the end of the month before sailing finally from New Zealand.
