SOME SMART SHOES

By POPPY BACON The most remarkable feature of the latest designs in shoes is the amount of decoration found in a single pair. So cleverly is it managed that we find ourselves liking the odd patching, the combination leathers and the eccentric cut, where, not six months ago we were almost Puritan in our desire for simplicity at any price. (We certainly had to pay for it.) It is quite impossible to lay down hard and fast rules about the most popular shape. Sandal shoes are with us again. Personally, I can think of no other shape which makes one’s foot quite so attractive, for the bar up the front, be it narrow, broad or of intertwined leathers, offers just the balance that seems to be required by a band of leather encircling the ankle. LACES RETURNING Lace-up shoes are returning to favour. But they are not the laceups of a year or two ago. They are cleverly-cut models, with short vamps and slashed backs, leaving only sufficient leather to keep the shoe to the foot. They are given a little security by diamond-shaped pieces of bril-liantly-coloured ' leather which fit round the sides of the foot and tie over the instep. It would be difficult to find a shoe, whether of the sports or afternoon
