Rhieims Catherat Restored
FRENCH SPIRIT TRIUMPHS WORSHIPPERS GATHER AGAIN By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10 a.m. PARIS, Wednesday. Although the restoration is not yet completed of Rheims Cathedral it was reopened for public warship for the first time since the war when M. Herriot, Minister of Education, solemnly handed the key of the basilica to Cardinal Lucon, who remained among his people until the fire started by a German shell in 1917 drove him from his house.
M. Herriot, addressing the assembly, said that the civilised world watched the work of destruction in a stupor. All creeds and opinions felt the wounds of the cathedral as if they had been suffered in the living flesh. There were good Frenchmen and ardent friends of Rheims who had realty wished that the basilica should remain as it was as a lesson. Such a decision, however, would have marked the capitulation of the spirit before brutality and violence. Re t. 'tion was imperative.—A. and N.Z. Sun.
