NO FOOD OR SHELTER

GIRL’S PATHETIC PLIGHT CHARGE OF VAGRANCY Rose Lacey, tearful and 21. stood in the dock at the Police Court this morn - ing and looked appealingly round the court. She was charged with having insufficient lawful means of support, and it had been suggested that she should b«; handed over to the care of Major Annie Gordon of the Salvation Army. She apparently disliked the idea. “She has been very antagonistic td the major,” Senior-Sergeant Edwards said. Her case was “stood down” for a while, to enable the major to have another talk with the girl. Later in the morning she again faced the bench. "If she lets me go I can look after myself,” she wept to Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. It was explained that the girl had come from Rotorua three weeks ago and had stayed at a boardinghouse in Symonds Street for a few days until all her money was gone. Since then she had slept In the Domain for a few nights and had obtained board at different places promising to pay when she got work. Last night Constable Allen found her in the women’s waiting room at the railway station. Her last meal was the day before yesterday she told him. “Oh deaj*,” said Mr. Hunt sympathetically when he heard this. "Remanded for a week in charge of Major Gordon.” Then to the major—“Take her home and give her a good feed and j look after her.”

"We just caught her in time,” he added as the girl left the court.
